TRAVEL INFORMATION

First of all, note that Marciana Marina (the place where you want to go) is DIFFERENT from Marciana without adjectives (which is another village, always in the Elba Island...).

The standard way to reach Marciana Marina is by taking the ferry boat that connects Piombino (on the Tuscany coast) to Portoferraio (in the Elba Island), and then to proceed by bus or by taxi. Piombino can be reached from Rome, Pisa, and Florence, either by train or by bus. The Elba Island also has its own small airport, in Marina di Campo. In this case Marciana Marina must be reached by taxi.

See below for more detailed travel information on the individual trip sections. Note also that the text below contains links to external travel sites. In some cases the reservation links may be unusable, if the travel dates are too far from the present time. Also, please check if the timetables have changed closer to the departure date (they may indeed change, about May-June, for the Summer season).

Flying to Italy

If you plan to reach Italy by air, we suggest that you choose either Fiumicino (FCO, near Rome), or Ciampino (CIA, also near Rome), or Pisa (PSA), or Florence (FLR) as your final destination.

As an alternative, Elba has a small airport (Aeroporto di Marina di Campo, EBA). There are a few flights, only in specific days of the week, with small planes operated by minor airlines (e.g. ElbaFly, form/to Malpensa, Pisa, Firenze; Intersky, from/to Munich, Zurich; SkyWork, from/to Bern).

If you arrive at Fiumicino Airport

There is a train connection (Leonardo Express) between Fiumicino Airport (Aeroporto Leonardo da Vinci) and the Central Railway Station in Rome (Roma Termini).

Then you may take a train to Piombino. There are several trains (direction Pisa-Genova) which stop in Campiglia, where you have to change train to Piombino harbor. The connection from Campiglia to Piombino is usually close to the arrival time in Campiglia.

If you arrive at Ciampino Airport

There are bus connections (e.g. a Terravision bus, or a COTRAL bus + Metro A) between Ciampino Airport (Aeroporto Giovan Battista Pastine) and the Central Railway Station in Rome (Roma Termini).

Then you may take a train to Piombino (see the above case).

If you arrive at Pisa Airport

Pisa Airport (Aeroporto Galileo Galilei) has its own railway station, from which you may take a train to Piombino (with connections at Pisa Centrale and Campiglia - see above).

If you arrive at Florence Airport

From Florence Airport (Aeroporto Amerigo Vespucci, Firenze Peretola) you have first to reach the downtown SITA bus station, which is close to the main railway station (Stazione FS Firenze Santa Maria Novella). An easy way is by taking a bus (SITA/ATAF "Vola in bus"). More comfortable (and more expensive) options are taxi or limousine service.

From Florence, you can either take a train to Piombino (with connections at Pisa Centrale and Campiglia - see above), or a direct bus to Piombino.

Ferry boats from Piombino to Portoferraio

The train station of Piombino Marittima (the harbor) is about 80 mt away from where ferry-boats leave for Portoferraio (the main harbor in the Elba Island).

The boat trip to Portoferraio takes 1 hour by ferry-boat and 40 minutes by hydrofoil. Tickets can be bought directly at the harbor-offices of two different boat Companies serving Elba: Toremar and Moby-Lines. Departures are very frequent (almost one every half hour in Summer time): you must check which Company leaves first!

For the timetables you may have a look at the following web pages
Piombino-Portoferraio      Portoferraio-Piombino
(anyway you should better cross-check with the websites of the boat Companies themselves)

From Portoferraio to Marciana Marina

From Portoferraio you can take a bus to Marciana Marina (N. 116). See here for a map, while the timetables for the next Summer are not available yet. One can check on the ATL website (see also the following website).

Otherwise, you need to take a taxi to Marciana Marina.
