Towards the molecular complexity in star-forming regions and proto-planetaty disks
One of the most important questions in molecular astrophysics is how, when, and where complex organic molecules, COMs (≥ 6 atoms) are formed. Thanks to recent progress in radioastronomy instrumentation for both single-dish and millimeter array (e.g. Herschel, NOEMA, ALMA), new results have been obtained. I will present some notable results on the detection of COMs, including prebiotic molecules, towards star forming regions including photo-planetary disks.

PROSPECTS: PRebiotic mOlecules from SPacE to ComeTS
Young low-mass protostars are known to be chemically rich, with the detection of a dozen of interstellar complex organic molecules (COMs). However, it is still unknown whether larger potentially prebiotic molecules, such as glycine, can be formed around young protostars and whether these COMs can survive in the solar nebula. I will present my AstroFIt 2 project that aims to understand the formation and the evolution of interstellar COMs at the origin of the prebiotic chemistry in the inner regions surrounding young low-mass protostars.

Lost in the Shells - a journey with the E-ELT M4 Adaptive Unit
The M4 Unit is the E-ELT 2.4 m flat deformable mirror, segmented into six thin shells controlled by more than 5000 actuators - now in the final design phase by the Italian consortium AdOptica. INAF is part of the working group with the task of the optical calibration of the system, starting in 2022 (?). On behalf of the team we will present the Season Premiere of a Science-Fiction series on this hot topic.

With the introduction of mandatory "alternanza Scuola Lavoro" the secondary school students need to attend 200 hours of off-school training or work experience. Thanks the generous collaboration of some of our colleagues, we can cooperate with some schools to use part of this time as an educational and professional guidance for the III and IV year students. This activity is hosted inside the Observatory and we will present some details.

Since April 2017 GIANO is finally offered to the community as originally designed: direct feeding without fibers. The incoming light is split by a dichroic to HARPS-N (visible) and GIANO (NIR), allowing the simultaneous use of the 2 high resolution spectrographs. The AOT36 TNG REM Call for Proposals is now open with deadline 19 May 2017.

Reconnection in magnetically dominated plasmas is often invoked to explain sudden energy release in many high-energy astrophysics scenarios, though models typically fail to provide the required short timescales. Here we present the first simulations of the tearing instability in the framework of relativistic resistive MHD, leading to explosive events occurring on a few light crossing times of the current sheet length.

We search for bulk motions in the intracluster medium (ICM) of massive clusters showing evidence of an ongoing or recent major merger with spatially resolved spectroscopy in Chandra data. We find several cases where significant bulk motions are present in the ICM, including the famous Bullet cluster.

ALMA reveals a new planetary system in the making
I will present new high angular resolution millimeter observations of the young protoplanetary system HD 169142 with ALMA. The data reveal a system made of multiple dust rings and gaps with a substantial drop of the gas density inside the dust gap. The resulting gas and dust surface densities hint at the presence of multiple planets shaping the disk structure via dynamical clearing and dust trapping.

We have analyzed and modelled the CO emission of a nearby Seyfert galaxy, NGC 34, with the aim of understanding the ISM properties in terms of density, temperature and dominant radiation field. NGC 34 represents a galaxy "prototype", therefore our approach can be seen as a pathfinder for future studies.

The Sample Return Mission OSIRIS-REx
OSIRIS-REx was successfully launched into space on 8th September 2016 from Kennedy Space Center. OSIRIS-REx is traveling to Bennu, a carbonaceous asteroid whose regolith may record the earliest history of our Solar System, it will collect and return samples back to Earth seeking answers to the questions that teach us about the history of the Sun and planets and the origin of life on Earth.

Revelation of exoplanetary atmospheres through high-resolution transmission spectroscopy
Our knowledge of exoplanetary atmospheres is growing exponentially in the last years, as we are passing from an era of exoplanet detection to one of exoplanet characterization. In my thesis, I examined the high-resolution transit data of the hot Jupiter HD 189733b, with the goal of detecting the sodium spectral signature in the exoplanetary atmosphere. Using the technique of transmission spectroscopy, I found excess absorption inside the core of the sodium doublet, but I also found evidence that most of this signal has stellar origin. Correcting for the stellar effects of rotation and center-to-limb variation, I retrieved the correct absorption due to exoplanetary sodium. Considering the increase of the instrumental precision and that the line-profile is used to derive the properties of the atmosphere, a careful disentangling of planetary and stellar contributions is an indispensable task for a correct exoplanetary atmospheric characterisation.

Interstellar Phosphorus in High Mass Star Forming Clouds: Multi-line Observations of the PN Molecule
Phosphorus is one of the crucial elements for life. It plays a central role in the structure of essential biotic molecules, such as nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), phospholipids (the skin of all cellular membranes) and the adenosine triphosphate (ATP), from which all forms of life assume energy. Despite its importance, the chemistry of Phosphorus in the interstellar medium (ISM) is still poorly known. The molecule of PN is one of the two P-bearing molecules detected in star-forming regions (PN & PO), but it is still not clear under which conditions it is formed. In order to investigate the main chemical route that leads to the formation of PN and the main mechanism of desorption, we present multi-line observations of PN towards 18 massive dense cores in different evolutionary stages. We compared the results for the molecule of PN with other molecules, tracing different chemical and physical conditions: SiO, SO and CH3OH. From our results an important release mechanism of PN seems to be sputtering of dust grains in shocked regions, but this can not be the only mechanism since the line proPiles of some of the sources do not show high-velocity wings (associated with shocked material), but narrow line widths. This conPirms the previous results of Fontani et al. (2016), and reinforces the conclusion that the origin of PN is not to be considered unique, since it could form in both shocked and quiescent gas.

Visit to telescopes on La Palma
For the second year, the astrophysiscs students of the course of Complementi di astronomia visited El Roque de Los Muchachos telescopes in La Palma to experience how the ground-based telescopes work in one of the most important observing sites in the world. They also had the opportunity of spending an observing night at the TNG acquiring data on extragalactic targets, selected by them and later analyzed during the laboratory classes.

We evaluate the impact of Kalman and neural network filtering techniques in enhancing performances and accuracy of atmospheric parameter forecasts applied to the ground-based astronomy. These techniques make use of measurements continuously produced in situ by various instruments in order to better tune the real-time forecast of different parameters which have an impact on the telescope operation.

The GENESIS-SKA project
The recipe to make an habitable planet like our own Earth requires a relatively small rocky planet, at the right distance from the host star, with a not too thick atmosphere rich in volatiles and capable of developing complex organic molecules chemistry. The SKA telescope, and more specifically the GENESIS-SKA project, will allow us to study in detail the evolution of dust as it evolves into planetesimals and rocky planets and to detect heavy complex organic molecules that today are beyond the reach of our observing capabilities.

Empowering SKA as a probe of galaxy evolution in HI
I will outline the broader science context of our recently accepted PRIN-SKA proposal, "Empowering SKA as a probe of galaxy evolution with HI (ESKAPE-HI)". There are two main objectives to be accomplished over the two-year duration of the project: the first is to establish baryonic scaling relations for a "local benchmark" based on stellar content, star-formation rate, dust mass, HI, and CO in nearby galaxies. The second is to set the stage for analogous higher-redshift studies by compiling vast multi-wavelength data sets for galaxy populations in the regions likely to be targeted by future SKA surveys. Also touched upon will be the feasibility of our science goals, and how they relate to the SKA precursors and other available HI observational facilities.

Tracing our chemical origins: deuteration and complex organic molecules in Sun-like protostars
Observations of interstellar complex organic molecules and deuterated species are used to disentangle all the processes at work in the inner 100 AU of a forming Sun-like star and its planetary system. The present measurements contribute to fill in the gap between prestellar cores and protoplanetary disks, showing how the gas chemical content is modified during the early evolutionary stages of a Sun-like star forming region.

From dust to planets: high resolution observations of small-scale structures in evolving protoplanetary disks
In circumstellar disks around young stars the study of the growth and evolution of dust grains is crucial for determining the initial conditions leading to the formation of planets. The development of new observing facilities like ALMA started to unveil a variety of small scale structures in several protoplanetary disks. This indicates that local processes are playing a significant role in the evolution of disks, and that planet formation may be happening at very early stages.

Assessing the chemical evolution of galaxies with large spectral surveys and spatially resolved observations
The study of the chemical evolution of star forming galaxies was done combining the analysis of large samples of local objects from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with near-infrared, spatially resolved spectroscopy of high-redshift sources obtained from new generation instruments like KMOS on the VLT and LUCI/ARGOS on the LBT. A new approach for gas-phase metallicity determination was based on the analysis of the emission lines in galaxy spectra.

Molecular clouds: magnetohydrodynamics, gravitational collapse and turbulence
Molecular clouds, the coldest and densest part of the Interstellar Medium and the places where stars form, are made by networks of intertwined filaments. The properties of filamentary molecular clouds and cores require a non thermal contribution, given by turbulence or magnetic fields. I will then focus on the properties of perturbations and turbulence during magnetised or non-magnetised collapses.

Unveiling the kinematical and dynamical properties of young open clusters with the Gaia-ESO Survey
The investigation of the dynamical properties of young star clusters play a key role in the study of cluster formation and evolution. High resolution spectroscopic data obtained for a large number of stars in several clusters by the Gaia-ESO Survey allow us to study in details their kinematical properties and probe their dynamical status. Here, I will present the new results obtained for a few clusters observed by GES and discuss about the implications for their dynamical evolution.

ALMA continuum observations of the young protoplanetary system AS 209
I will present new high resolution (~0.15 arcsec) ALMA continuum observations of AS 209, a young (age ~ 0.5 Myr) proto-Sun (M ~ 0.9 Msun) surrounded by a gas- and dust-rich disk. Our ALMA observations reveals the presence of multiple dust gaps. The observations are compared to hydrodynamical simulations of planet-disk interaction. I will discuss the results in the context of disk evolution and planet formation theory.

The (fast) solar wind turbulent plasma is dominated by Alfvenic fluctuations propagating away from the Sun, with physical properties depending on the heliocentric distance. Here I will discuss the fate of (monochromatic) Alfven waves in such expanding environment via numerical MHD simulations.

Fast outflows quenching star formation at high redshift
Negative feedback from accreting black holes is considered a fundamental physical process in galaxy evolution. It is indeed to provide the link between the growth of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies. The [OIII]λ5007 line emission is a good tracer of outflows and ionized gas dynamics in the narrow-line regions of AGN. I will present VLT-SINFONI near-IR integral field spectra of five quasar at redshift z=2.4. The kinematical analysis of the [OIII] line shows complex gas kinematics in a region of several kpc from the location of the AGN, with blue shifted velocities of a few hundreds of km/s and line widths up to 1500 km/s. [OIII] emission likely traces a massive outflow with a conical morphology. Furthermore we detect the presence of faint, narrow (< 200 km/s) [OIII] emission anti correlated with the presence of the fast blue shifted [OIII]. Overall, our data are consistent with a picture in which narrow [OIII] emission traces star forming gas in the host galaxy, which is absent in the conical outflows, as expected when fast outflows quench star formation. This scenario is confirmed by the observations of the Ha emission, tracing star formation in the host galaxy, which is strongly suppressed in the outflows region. Finally, I will present AGN feedback model to describe the ionized gas dynamic and the properties of outflows.

Forecasts of the OT as a support to the ground-based astronomy supported by AO facilities: state of art at Arcetri
In this contribution I will briefly present the state of art of the studies and projects we are carrying on in Arcetri in the context of the forecast of the optical turbulence and atmospherical parameters conceived as a tool to support the ground-based astronomy particularly that assisted by the AO. With ALTA and MOSE we are going towards the setting-up of automatic operational systems for LBT, VLT and the E-ELT. With STARMET we are investigating, in collaboration with LaMMA, the possibility to set-up in Florence an advanced center for the OT forecasts at different top-class telescopes in the world.

Effect of mass loading in bow shock nebulae
Bow shock pulsar wind nebulae show highly non-smooth tail structures in Hα, radio and X-rays. We investigate the long term dynamics of the bow shock nebulae created by pulsars moving supersonically through partially ionized interstellar medium. Ionization of neutrals penetrating into the pulsar wind tail and the resulting mass loading changes dramatically the flow dynamics of a light leptonic pulsar wind. The photo-ionization by the UV light produced enough massloading to strongly affect the tail flow. Using a quasi 1-D approximation, we find that mass loading leads to the fast expansion of the pulsar wind tail, making the tail flow intrinsically non-stationary. The resulting shapes of pulsar bow shock nebulae, in Hα radio and X-rays, compare favorably with observations.

I will briefly discuss the historical and conceptual evolution of the equivalence principle from Galileo (involving just moving bodies and implying the equivalence of gravitational and inertial mass) to Einstein (involving also electrodynamics and constituting the foundation of General Relativity).

E-ELT M4 on the go: optical test of the Demonstration Prototype
The M4 is the deformable mirror for the european ELT and has just enter the MAIT phase (manufacturing, integration and test), led by the italian consortium AdOptica. The M4 is a system composed by a 2.6 m diameter monolithic reference plate, 6 thin glass shells, 5316 actuators providing 1 kHz, 100um stroke for the high order adaptive correction. A Demonstration Prototype (M4DP) with two sub-shells has been assembled to allow the verification of the technological updates (with respect to the LBT and VLT mirrors) and of the functioning and testing procedures for the M4. The M4DP was optically calibrated at INAF Merate by a working group led by Arcetri: the optical test allowed to flatten, align and co-phase the shells at the requested 20 nm RMS Wavefront accuracy; also, specific procedures for the M4 calibration were tested. In this AstroBignè presentation I will summarize the optical test activity on the M4DP, looking forward to start again on the M4.

Deuterated molecules as unexpected chemical tracers for shocks
The process of deuterium enrichment in molecules from the main reservoir HD is initiated in molecular clouds by exothermic gas-phase reactions. For this reason, deuterated molecules have long been used as tracers of the coldens and densest portions of molecular clouds. Although this general framework remains true, the story is not so simple. Based on the results recently obtained with mm interferometers (PdBI and ALMA), I will show observational evidence that deuterated molecules are also excellent tracers of recently shocked regions (i.e. regions in a completely different physical regime), under peculiar circumstances.

Twisted Magnetosphere in General Relativistic Neutron Stars
The phenomenology of the emission of magnetars supports the idea that their magnetosphere are tightly twisted in the vicinity of the star. We will discuss the properties of equilibrium models of magnetized neutron stars endowed with a twisted magnetosphere obtained solving the general relativistic Grad–Shafranov equation, both in the interior and in the exterior of the star.

A revised cool core-starburst connection (and the Phoenix cluster)
Recent results on the cool cores and possible cooling flows in the center of massive galaxy clusters are presented. We argue that, in several cases, the star formation observed in the central galaxy (BCG) is not directly associated to the putative cooling flow. We also report the results from the deep XMM observation of the Phoenix cluster, the largest cooling-flow candidate observed so far.

One of the key scientific projects of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope is a large survey for searching pulsars both in isolated and in binary systems. The data analysis must be performed in real time with an input data rate which is expected to reach 0.6TeraSamples/sec. This problem is well suited for a massively parallel computing engine, but the dimensions of SKA bring this challenge to a new level of difficulty. Here at Arcetri we have finalized the developement of a highly optimized module for GPUs and the implementation on other massively parallel architecture is under study.

Turbulence in expanding media
Turbulence causes plasma heating in many astrophysical systems that usually have peculiar inhomogeneities, like expansion, contraction, rotation. Their effect is commonly neglected in numerical simulations of turbulence because of the limited resolution currently achievable. The Expanding Box Model is an approximation that overcomes this difficulty for system in spherical expansion/contraction. I will present an application to the (expanding) solar wind, highlight differences with homogenous turbulence, and discuss possible applications to other expanding/contracting media.

After 10 years and a travel of about 6 billions of Km, last August the Rosetta spacecraft entered in orbit (non Keplerian) around the comet 67P/CG. Rosetta started then a global mapping and studying of the comet, followed by the the released of the lander Philae. Unfortunately, because of thecnical problems, the lander jumped back and reached a crater with vary small illumination. In the talk I'll give the last news and results obtained so far by the orbiter and the lander.

Rotation curves are useful tools for measuring galaxy masses and test cosmological models. The degeneracy between the baryonic and dark matter content can be alleviated by tracing the curve very far out and reconstructing the stellar mass via synthesis models. I will outline the latest results and the work in progress on M33 and other nearby low luminosity galaxies.

The feedback of protostellar jets on planet formation
Our recent results from HST and the incoming ALMA images show that jets are launched in the same region and at the same time in which planets are forming. Thus it is mandatory to investigate if, beyond the extraction of excess angular momentum from the accretion disk, jets have a direct feedback on planet formation. In this framework, I will illustrate a new study which shows how the launch of jets may generate dust traps in the disks, where grains can have the time to aggregate in larger bodies.

GIARPS (GIAno & haRPS-n): the new facility at TNG
GIARPS@TNG is the new system that will allow in 2017 to acquire high-resolution spectra from 0.38 to 2.5 microns simultaneously, combining for the first time two instruments already in use. I will present the project from the GIANO point of view, that in this new configuration will be finally as originally designed: with direct light feeding from the telescope, removing all the problems due to the fibers, like the modal noise and the low efficiency.

Polarimetry of pulsar wind nebulae: what X-rays can tell us that Radio and Optical cannot
Synchrotron X-ray emission, due to relativistic charges in strong magnetic field, is the typical electromagnetic signature of high-energy astrophysics. However intensity alone is not very sensitive to the geometry of the magnetic field, hiding us a fundamental information to understand the dynamics of these sources. Yet X-ray polarimetry is still not available today. I will show how, in the specific case of PWNe, it can help us to understand the dynamics, and the role of turbulence in these systems.

First spectrally complete survey of water emission at near-IR wavelengths in comet C/2014 Q2 Lovejoy
We acquired the first comprehensive high resolution spectral survey of comet C/2014 Q2 Lovejoy in the 0.9-2.5 µm range, by observing with GIANO at the TNG. Our observations establish the feasibility of astrobiology-related investigations with future high resolution IR spectrographs on 30-m class telescopes, e.g., the HIRES spectrograph on the E-ELT telescope.

The LATT (Large Aperture Telescope Technology) project
The LATT project takes advantage of two decades of adaptive optics development to demonstrate the concept of a low-weight active primary mirror for space. We developed under ESA contract a 40cm spherical mirror prototype, with an areal density lower than 22kg/m2, with 19 contactless voice coil actuators and co-located capacitive position sensors. It was subjected to thermo-vacuum, vibration and optical tests. We present the background and outcomes of the LATT to explore the concept of lightweight active primary mirrors as building blocks for very large segmented deployable apertures.

Since 1901, 573 Nobel Prizes have been awarded to a total of 900 Laureates. Only 49 of these are women: 4.5 %. If we focus on Physics, out of 200 Nobel prize winners only 2 are women: 1 %. Is it particularly difficult for women to reach levels of excellence in Physics? In reality among the Physics laureates there should probably be at least 6-7 more Nobelwomen...

Towards a statistical description of planets and exoplanetary atmospheres: the ARIEL space mission
ARIEL (Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanets Large-survey) has been proposed as a medium-class mission competing for the ESA M4 launch opportunity in the context of the 2015-2025 Cosmic Vision program. It has been conceived by an European Consortium as the first space mission to extensively perform remote-sensing on the atmospheres of a well defined set of warm and hot exoplanets.. ARIEL will observe a large number (~500) of gas giants, Neptunes and super-Earths around a variety of host stars exploiting transit spectroscopy in the 2-8 μm spectral range and broad-band optical photometry. Its Payload design is based on the successful study of the M3 EChO (Exoplanets Characterisation Observatory) mission with several simplifications and mass reductions.

Structure and age of the young cluster NGC 2264 from the Gaia-ESO Survey
The mechanism leading to the formation of star clusters from the contraction and fragmentation of molecular clouds is the subject of much debate. One of the goal of the Gaia-ESO Survey is to analyse the spatial structure, the kinematics and the star formation history of star clusters younger than 10 Myr to address this debate. I will present some results from the analysis of the Gaia-ESO observations of the young cluster NGC2264, which show that we are able to reconstruct important details on the star formation process of this cluster and fulfill our original goal.

Mapping the Milky Way with the Australian Long Baseline Array
For the first time, we have used the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA) to measure the parallax distances to 6.7 GHz methanol masers in the Milky Way Galaxy. I will be discussing how these inaugural results from the only Southern hemisphere VLBI instrument are being incorporated into the Bar and Spiral Structure Legacy (BeSSeL) survey to map the Milky Way galaxy.

Synchrotron emission with a partly random field & models of Radio Supernova Remnants
We present an extension of the classical synchrotron theory, for the combination of an ordered magnetic field plus a random component. Exact analytical formulae are obtained for a power-law distribution of particles. These results are then applied to model structure and polarization of the radio emission from shell-type Supernova Remnants.

An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-based system for the characterization/calibration of Low Frequency Aperture Arrays
I will give an overview of the technical characteristics of the Low Frequency Aperture Array (LFAA) of SKA. Then, I will describe the two Italian demonstrators, called Medicina and Sardinia Array Demonstrators, designed for testing new devices and concepts developed by INAF for a possible installation in SKA-LFAA. One of these systems is a custom hexacopter equipped with RF instrumentation able to characterize the antenna/array far-field pattern and to calibrate the array in the real operative environment.

Waiting for Astro-H: bulk motions in the Intra Cluster Medium of massive clusters observed with Chandra
In February 2016, the Japanese satellite Astro-H will be launched.  Astro-H is expected to provide, for the first time, high resolution X-ray spectra from an X-ray bolometer, allowing one to measure the dynamic status of the Intra Cluster Medium (ICM), including bulk motions and the turbulent velocity field.  In the meanwhile, we investigated the ICM dynamics with CCD, X-ray spectra exploiting the exquisite angular resolution of Chandra, finding evidence for bulk motions of the order of few thousands of km/s in a few massive, merging clusters.

On the development of the passive front-end for the SRT focal plane array Q-Band receiver
I will describe design aspects concerning the passive devices of the receiver front-end of the 19-pixels Q-band focal-plane-array for SRT. While the receiver is still under development, the passive front-end part of that receiver has been recently completed and I'll be able to show results about Electromagnetic modeling, fabrication and tests.

Improving Performances of Parallel Programs. I.e.: How to Avoid Performance Degradation
While measuring performances of parallel programs on multicore servers we noticed a large variability in execution time of both a real-world application and a simple parallel oriented benchmark. We discuss the effects of the optimization strategies implemented in the Linux kernel to exploit the capabilities of multi-cpu/multi-core architectures and their penalizing effect on the performances of some typical cpu-intensive parallel applications. And we also suggest some simple solutions to obtain full performances on such applications.
