Proposal preparation for IBIS and ROSA
observations in service mode

 SETUP: For service mode observations within the SOLARNET Access Program, ROSA and IBIS can be utilized either as stand alone instruments, or combined together. In the latter case, light will be split so that ROSA operates as the blue "arm" of IBIS, observing blueward of 500 nm. To optimize execution of observations, the spectral intervals accessible by either instrument will be fixed a priori.

IBIS will be used in spectroscopic or spectropolarimetric mode, choosing  any combination of the following filters:

Please remember that the sustained maximum frame rate for the IBIS acquistion is 8 fps (14 fps for single wavelength bursts): the scanning time of each spectral line will be proportional to the number of wavelengths sampled within the line.  Also allow for 1-2 extra s for pre-filter change if more than one spectral line is to be sampled. No particular limitation to the selection of spectral sampling points is enforced; PI can select which combination is deemed more proper to the scientific objectives. Repetition of spectral sampling (i.e. a number of exposures at a single wavelength point) is also allowed in case image reconstruction is desired for spectral data.
The spectropolarimetric mode implies both increased exposure times, and a reduction of the FOV to about half of that available in normal spectroscopic mode - hence roughly 40"x95".

When working in parallel with IBIS, ROSA can utilize the following broadband filters (any subset):

PROPOSAL STRUCTURE: Proposals should include up to max 2 pages, including a scientific rationale and  technical requests (detailing i.e. spectral filters and wavelength sampling). PDF submission is preferred.
Please try to provide the following information in your proposal:
  • A clear scientific case, with proper background information and well identifiable goals;
  • A well detailed description of the observational strategy including spectral sampling and desired cadence, as well as target selection criteria. 
  • A comment  on how such observations will allow you to meet the scientific goals;
  • The minimum period of time (e.g. continuous hours, successive days) of observations necessary to fulfill scientific goals of the proposal. This is of particular relevance in the execution of programs in service mode, where single programs requirements have to be weighed with general efficiency of observations;
  • The lowest acceptable seeing conditions to fulfill scientific goals of the proposals. As "excellent seeing" conditions might be met only sporadically, chances to run the proposal will increase if acceptable seeing conditions can be relaxed;
  • For the case of joint IBIS and ROSA observations, proposals should indicate which instrument is to be considered as the primary one. 

Finally, PIs and Co-Is should be named and institutes identified. Note that certain criteria of eligibility must be satisfied:  the PI and at least 50% of Co-Is of proposals requesting SOLARNET time must be nationals of the EU and associated countries, but NOT from the country owing the infrastructure or instrument (e.g. Italian researchers will not be able to utilize SOLARNET time for IBIS observations). FINAL NOTE: We expect that each scientific projects carried out in service mode will typically require observations for 1-2 days. However, the TAC has agreed that exceptional proposals might be considered for longer durations or requiring repeated observations over multiple days. We would also note that even though service-mode is expected to optimize observing efficiency, there is no guarantee that your proposal will be run, whether due to inclement weather, insufficient seeing quality, lack of suitable targets etc.
