The research of the Observatory is focused towards some specific areas :
1. Interstellar medium and star formation.
2. External galaxies, with special emphasis on their early evolution and on the study of active galactic nuclei.
3. Solar physics.
4. Theoretical studies of the young universe and high energy astrophysics.
5. Development of very large telescopes and associated instrumentation/techniques both in the Optical-IR and in
the radio bands.
This activity involves the use of national (Galileo) and international
(mostly ESO) telescope a variety of important space and radio facilities,
as well as the involvement in forthcoming projects such as The Large Binocular
Telescope and - hopefully - The Atacama Large Binocular Telescope and - hopeful ly - The Atacama Large Millimeter Array, (ALMA). Many programs are carried out
in a context of collaborations at an international and national level and
locally, with the Department of Astronomy and Space Physics of the University
of Florence and with the Institute of Radio Astronomy of the National Research
Council.
A number of visiting scientists and foreing fellows, coming from different
parts of the world, work in Arcetri, and they represent by now a sazible
fraction of the scientific staff.
Most of the work is published in international Journals and conference
proceedings. Once a paper is accepted by the referees, or if it qualifies as
an invited presentation, its electronic version is collected in this Web page.
